Notes from a Large College

What?

Ground rules: expectations of behaviour, standards for the class (tutor/students).

But I have no expectations. We all have behaviours and standard that are defined separately(Student-centred learning).

Why?

Disorganised chaos Set boundaries for students Avoid repetition Clarity for students and stops bad habits Promote ‘learnacy’:’ teaching people how to learn. Creativity helps us to learn. Teachers promote learning. Autonomous learners.

Medal or mission.

How?

Open discussion. Display. Suggestion. Allow 1 rule. Promote ownership of rules

Point scoring system to reinforce and promote rules.

Frank Coffield. (the Great)

We are Learning by doing Experiential learning David Kolb (1984)

(but i recently saw some wasps eating a maggot: four pinned down and were dissecting it and taking it away in pieces: how did they learn that?)

Reflective observation

Abstract Conceptualization

Active experimentation.

Start of Cycle — Having an experience(activist) Reviewing the experience(theorist) Concluding from the experience(reflector) Planning the next steps(pragmatist) –End of Cycle

Kolb’s Experiential Learning Model

Start at any pint on the cycle Follow the direction of the arrows Do not omit any stage Repeat the cycle as necessary

Advantages of the learning cycle

Encourages variety of activity Ensures all learning styles are catered for Helps learner develop learning skills

Encourages evidence based practice, but it may not apply to all.

Are the learners learning? Are they making progress.

Biggest thing that goes wrong is failing to have control the class…

Scheme of work and lesson plan for each lesson.

Tutorials: 12:30.

Distance learning to do literacy or numeracy. ———–Things are too black and white. Scientist. Right wrong. Binary. On/off. We are forgetting people are individuals. We are telling people they are labels, models, it over simplified people.

Mental evolution.

(but i recently saw some wasps eating a maggot: four pinned down and were dissecting it and taking it away in pieces: how did they learn that?)

Are we oversimplifying the human race with all these labels, categories, definitions of types…etc.

Life isn’t as simple as shopping at a supermarket for symbols of humanity.
